Smyly exits early, Giants lose to Indians

CLE 7

SF 1

FINAL

Winning pitcher: Zach Plesac (1-0)

Losing pitcher: Andrew Suarez (0-1)

Drew Smyly walked onto the mound today seeking his first win of the Spring, he walked off 30 pitches later. He recorded just 1 out in the top of the 1st inning while allowing 1 hit, 2 walks and struck out 1 batter. Smyly left the game and later threw in the bullpen but told reporters after the game he just couldn't get the guys out. Giants manager Gabe Kapler replaced Smyly with Brandon Lawson who induced an inning-ending double play. Smyly had Tommy John surgery 2 seasons ago, so he was taken out as a precaution. Brandon Belt went yard on the first pitch he saw in the bottom of the 4th inning for his 2nd home run of the Spring. The team's bats were silenced with 3 hits, and were a pathetic 0-2 with 5 runners left in scoring position on the afternoon.

Zach Plesac made the Plesac name happy today. Zach got his first Spring Training win today going 4 innings and allowed 1 run off 3 hits with 4 strikeouts. The Indians bullpen gave up just 3 walks after Plesac departed and struck out 7 batters with no runs allowed. The club helped their young pitcher secure a win when Franmil Reyes singled in the top of the 4th and two batters later, Oscar Mercado homered to give Cleveland a 2-0 lead. Pinch hitter Wilson Garcia added a 2-run single in the top of the 7th to push their lead to 4-1 and Ernie Clement scored Wilson with an RBI single of his own. Bobby Bradley had 2 of the clubs 13 hits and an RBi on the day.

Kevin Gausman takes the ball tomorrow in the team's second meeting against the Brewers, with Josh Lindblom going for Milwaukee.
