SF gets their 5 game winning streak snapped

SD 6

The San Francisco Giants saw their 5 game winning streak get snapped tonight in their loss against San Diego. Starter Trevor Cahill was done after 3 innings and allowed 4 runs off 5 hits with 3 strikeouts. Drew Smyly came off the injured list and relieved Cahill pitching 4 innings of 2 run ball (1 earned) off 2 hits with 8 strikeouts. He is the first Giants pitcher to have 8+ strikeouts in relief since Scott Garrelts did it in 8 innings but this was in 1984. They trailed 3-0 heading into the top of the 2nd inning but Wilmer Flores knocked his 9th home run of the year to left-center field to bridge the deficit to 2 runs. Through 41 games this season Flores has tied his homer total from last year, it took him 89 games to get to 9 while with Arizona. Mauricio Dubon walked to lead off the top of the 6th and after two strikeouts Donovan Solano knocked his 15th double to put Dubon on 3rd. Brandon Belt came up in an attempt to try to inch closer to the 5-1 Padres lead, instead, he grounded out to end the inning, the team was 0-2 in the game in scoring chances, leaving 5 in scoring position. Donovan Solano had 3 of the teams 7 hits, two of them going for extra bases. The Giants struck out 14 times, which included 3 from Mike Yastrzemski and Joey Bart as Evan Longoria and Darin Ruf struck out twice.

San Diego had other plans as they've been on quite a tear lately, winners of now 5 games in a row. Trent Grisham and Fernando Tatis Jr both singled to lead off the bottom of the 1st and then both stole a base as Manny Machado stepped up. Machado popped out but Mitch Moreland doubled in both runners for a quick 2-0 lead. Austin Nola then doubled in Moreland to extend their lead to 3-0. Manny Machado left the yard for his 13th dinger of the season in the bottom of the 3rd inning. Jorge Ona hit his first major league home run for his first career hit to push their lead to 5-1 in the bottom of the 4th. Chris Paddack left the game after 2 innings and allowed 1 run off 1 hit with 4 strikeouts. He had a sprained right ankle and was relieved by Adrian Morejon who pitched 1 2/3 innings and allowed 2 hits with 3 strikeouts. Jurickson Profar singled with 1 out and then went to 3rd base after Trent Grisham rolled a ball under Donovan Solano's glove in the bottom of the 7th. Fernando Tatis Jr came up and hit a sacrifice fly to score Profar.

Record 23-22
