Samardzija to face Seattle from Scottsdale

Jeff Samardzija had been asked to lead the rotation this year with Madison Bumgarner signing with Arizona over the Winter. Samardzija has delivered into that roll this Spring so far and looks to continue as he faces the Mariners today. The Notre Dame alum has started 2 games and is 1-0, he has faced 19 batters and has 2 strikeouts and 2 walks apiece. The Shark has only pitched 5 innings and has managed a 1.50 ERA. Samardzija has a regular-season record of 0-2 in 3 starts vs the Mariners which includes 18 strikeouts and a 4.35 ERA. While dawing a White Sox jersey, he last faced the Mariners in the 2015 season and took the loss going 5.2 innings and allowed 5 runs off 8 hits with 8 strikeouts and 3 walks.

Seattle will throw out pitcher Justus Sheffield, no relation to Gary Sheffield. This Sheffield came over to the Mariners in a trade during the offseason that sent James Paxton to the Yankees for Sheffield, Dom Thompson Williams, and Erik Swanson. Sheffield was previously in the Indians organization after being drafted 31st in the 1st round of the 2014 June Amateur Draft. He pitched in 8 games last year (7 starts) and went 0-1 in 36 innings and had 37 strikeouts plus a 5.50 ERA. Hunter Pence is the only Giant with experience against the Tennessee native, he reached on a single in a Mariners 5-4 win last season.

First pitch is at 12:05pm
