Ruf's 3 RBIs help Giants past Royals

SF 3 KC 1

Winning pitcher: Derrick Rodriguez (1-1)

Losing pitcher: Ian Kennedy (0-1)

Save: Trey McNutt (1)

Derrick Rodriguez had a longer leash today and rightfully so as he got himself a win. He pitched 2 scoreless innings and allowed just 1 hit with 1 walk and strikeout apiece. Abiatal Avelino singled to begin the top of the 2nd inning but then was thrown out at 3rd on Mauricio Dubon's single. Newly signed first baseman Darin Ruf stepped into the box and launched his first Spring Training home run to give the Giants a 2-0 lead. After Buster Posey singled and Abiatal Avelino walked, Dubon struck out. Ruf came up and singled in Posey to push the Giants lead to 3-0. Today's 3 RBI day for Ruf was the first time since September 24 against the Mets while with the Phillies.

The Royals sent out former longtime Cub Mike Montgomery to make his Royals Spring Training debut. Montgomery pitched just 1 inning and allowed 1 hit along with 1 strikeout. The Kansas City bats were quiet most of the day as they went 0-3 with 5 runners left in scoring position. Shortstop Jeison Guzman got the Royals on the board with a solo shot to center field to cut into the Giants 3-1 lead. Maikel Franco had 2 of the clubs 5 hits on the day.

The Giants welcome back Johnny Cueto tonight in their split squad match up tonight against Antonio Senzatela and the Rockies.
