The San Francisco Giants saw an old friend of theirs tonight but facing them from the mound against them. It was a bittersweet reunion for Madison Bumgarner's first start against the Giants in his career, he signed with the Diamondbacks over the Winter. Trevor Cahill left the game again pretty early as he was done after 2 2/3 innings with 1 run allowed off 2 hits with a pair of strikeouts and walks each. Caleb Baragar picked up the win after 1 1/3 innings with 1 hit and 1 strikeout. Tonight was his first start since leaving his last one against the DBacks last week and also left early with hip discomfort. Evan Longoria and Darin Ruf hit back to home runs for the Giants in the bottom of the 2nd after the team trailed 1-0. They lead 2-1 going into the bottom of the 6th inning and Brandon Belt coaxed a 1 out walk and scored on Joey Bart's first career triple. Mauricio Dubon also hit his first career triple after Bart to give the Giants a 4-1 edge. They had a chance to add on in the bottom of the 8th when Daniel Robertson walked with 1 out, and Joey Bart singled him to 2nd base. Mauricio Dubon lined out and Austin Slater struck out to end the inning. Slater is in his first game back since dealing with an injury. He was 0-5 with 2 strikeouts on the night. Wilmer Flores, Joey Bart, and Dubon both had 2 hits on the night as 5 of their hits went for extra bases.
Madison Bumgarner told reporters before the game that he reminisced once he got to the yard last night. The former Giant pitched just 4 innings and allowed 2 runs off 3 hits with 2 strikeouts and walks each. Kole Calhoun walked to open the ballgame and then went to 2nd base off a Trevor Cahil wild pitch. Ketel Marte grounded out and then Tyler Walker hit a sacrifice fly to give Arizona a quick 1-0 lead. Daulton Varsho hit his first home run of the year to McCovey Cove, which was also the first of his career. The Diamondbacks had Ketel Marte and pinch-runner Tim Locastro on base with 2 outs in the top of the 8th and Eduardo Escobar stepped up, He singled in Marte as the Giants lead was down to a 4-3 game, it was his team-leading 2nd hit on the night. The team had 6 hits total on the night and were 1-6 with 6 runners left in scoring position. Designated hitter Josh Fuentes struck out to end the small rally for Arizona. More on Bumgarner, tonight was his first game back since going on the 10-day injured list with back spasms. He has now allowed 9 home runs in his first 5 starts in a Diamondbacks uniform. Reliever Keury Mella entered the game after Bumgarner departed, the significance with Mella is that he was who the Giants sent with Adam Duvall to the Reds for Mike Leake back in 2015. Arizona is now 0-5 when MadBum takes the mound.
