Giants win again, inch closer to postseason

SF 7

The San Francisco Giants may have used a different tactic in tonights win but a win is a win and gets them closer to the playoffs. Caleb Baragar made the opener start and pitched just the 1st inning, he allowed only a double by Charlie Blackmon in the top of the 2nd. Logan Webb relieved him and pitched 5 1/3 solid innings for the win, he allowed 2 runs off 7 hits with a walk and a strikeout. The club trailed 1-0 going into the bottom of the 4th before Evan Longoria homered to lead off the inning for his 7th of the year. Alex Dickerson continued his hot streak with a doubled in the bottom of the 5th and tagged up on a Donovan Solano fly out. Brandon Belt walked and then Brandon Crawford hit a sacrifice fly to tie the game at 2-2 scoring Dickerson. Evan Longoria came up again and walked before Mauricio Dubon left the yard with his 3rd homer of the year and put the Giants up 5-2. Joey Bart tripled to open the bottom of the 8th and Steven Duggar singled him in to pad their lead to 6-2. Dickerson came up and doubled Duggar to 3rd with Drew Robertson pinch-hitting for Donovan Solano in the on-deck circle. Robertson had a chance to give the Giants more insurance runs but grounded into a fielder's choice with Duggar out at home. Brandon Belt singled in Dickerson to push their lead to 7-2. It was Brandon Belt's 500th career RBI and 28th of the year. Dickerson and Belt had 3 of the teams 10 hits on the night as San Francisco was 3-12 with 8 runners left in scoring position. He is now hitting .500 against the Rockies this season with 11 extra-base hits in 9 games collecting 10 RBIs. Tonight's win gives San Francisco a 28-27 record, both Milwaukee Philadelphia lost today, the Giants now have the 2nd wild card spot behind Cincinnati.

The Rockies again tried to get the Giants out of playoff contention but came up short. They at least were on the board early when Raimel Tapia singled with 1 out in the top of the 3rd and went to nd on a Kevin Pillar ground out. He then scored on a Trevor Story single to put the Rockies up 1-0. Garrett Hampson singled in the top of the 5th off of Giants pitcher Logan Webb with 1 out and then scored on a Ramiel Tapia double breaking a 1-1 tie. The Rockies offense was held to 9 hits including 4 doubles on the night. Ramiel Tapia, Charlie Blackmon, and Garrett Hampson had 2 hits apiece. Starter Ryan Castellani tossed 4 2/3 innings and allowed 4 runs off 5 hits with 5 walks and struck out 1 batter. Tonight's loss will bring the Rockies playoff chances closer to being nonexistent.
