Giants squander 5-run lead, lose in extras

The San Francisco Giants had the game in the bag and almost handed their Bay Area rivals just their 3rd loss in the last 13 games. Evan Longoria helped the Giants get out to an early lead with a solo home run in the bottom of the 1st. Donovan Solano and Wilmer Flores singled heading into the bottom of the 3rd before Hunter Pence launched a homer to the center field bullpens to push the Giants lead to 4-0. Chadwick Tromp and Mauricio Dubon then singled in the bottom of the 4th and Donovan Solano walked to load the bases. Evan Longoria singled in Tromp and Dubon to extend the Giants lead to 6-0. Mike Yastrzemski added a solo shot of his own in the bottom of the 8th for his 5th homer of the year. Wilmer Flores had 4 of the teams 13 hits, but they were 2-10 with 10 runners left in scoring position. Johnny Cueto pitched 7 strong innings and allowed 2 runs off 3 hits with 5 strikeouts and walked 2 batters. Tonight was the Giants' first loss when leading by five or more in the ninth or later since 1929.


The Oakland A's trailed as many as 6 runs before they started to chip away at the Giants lead. Mark Cahna singled with 1 out in the top of the 7th and scored on a Robbie Grossman triple and then Grossman scored on a Khris Davis then grounded out but Oakland inched closer to the Giants 6-2 lead. Matt Olson hit his 7th home run of the year in the top of the 9th inning which started a 1 out rally. Mark Cahna walked and after Robbie Grossman reached on a fielder's choice, Khris Davis was plunked to load the bases. Stephen Piscotty launched his 3td home run and 2nd grand slam of the year to the left-field bleachers to tie the game at 7-7. The A's have 3 grand slams in the 9th inning or later and the rest of the league has zero. Matt Chapman started the top of the 10th off on 2nd base per the new rule of 2020 and then went to 3rd on a Matt Olson groundout. Mark Cahna hit a sacrifice fly to give the A's an 8-7 late in the game. Marcus Semien and Stephen Piscotty each had 2 of the clubs 8 hits on the night. Starter Jesus Luzardo went 3 1/3 innings and allowed 6 runs off 9 hits with 2 walks and struck out 3 batters.
