Giants sink to Padres on home opener

Jeff Samardzija finally made his season debut as it went for not in the Giants home opener. Samardzija tossed 4 innings and struck out 1 batter while giving up 5 runs off 4 hits with a walk issued. Mike Yastrzemski opened the bottom of the 1st off with a single and Pablo Sandoval advanced him to 2nd base with a ground out. Wilmer Flores lined a ball past Manny Machado and then left fielder Tommy Pham botched it as Yastrzemski scored on the error making it 1-0 Giants. San Francisco trailed 5-1 in the bottom of the 6th when Mauricio Dubon and Yastrzemski hit back to back doubles and then Pablo Sandoval was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Wilmer Flores came to the plate with 0 outs and grounded into a force plate to score Dubon and Hunter Pence popped out. Catcher Tyler Heineman singled in Yastrzemski to make ita 5-3 game and cut the Padres lead to 2 runs. The Giants bullpen allowed just 1 hit and struck out 4 batters over the 5 innings of the game.

The Padres improved to 4-1 for their best start since they went onto the World Series in 1984. San Diego trailed 1-0 in the top of the 3rd when Wil Meyers singled and Francisco Mejia walked to start the inning. After Josh Naylor popped out, Fernando Tatis Jr homered to the arcade seats in right field to put San Diego out in front 3-1. Eric Hosmer singled with 1 out in the top of the 4th and two batters later Wil Myers homered to the new bullpens to push their lead out to 5-1. Newly acquired pitcher Zach Davies made his Padres debut and went 5 innings and allowed 3 runs (2 earned) with 5 strikeouts off 5 hits.
