Giants offense goes quiet in doubleheader

Logan Webb and the Giants couldn't get a grip on the Dodgers in their first game of the doubleheader today. Webb pitched just 3 2/3 innings with 5 runs allowed on 4 hits with 4 strikeouts and issued 2 walks. Their offense went quiet after having only 4 hits on the day with 2 of them being doubles from Wilmer Flores and Donovan Solano. The club was shutout of the first time this season after going 0-4 with 4 runners left in scoring position.


The Los Angeles Dodgers needed a day off in between their walk-off loss Tuesday and today. Their day off yesterday came after the game was postponed due to the boycott of sports across the nation. Mookie Betts walked to start the game and then went to 2nd on a Corey Seager single. Justin Turner moved the runners over a base with a ground out and then Cody Bellinger grounded out on a fielder choice but Betts scored to make it 1-0. The Dodgers added on in the top of the 4th when AJ Pollock walked and then was out on a force play when Max Muncy grounded out Chris Tayler singled Muncy to 3rd base as Joc Pederson singled in Muncay making it a 2-0 game. Austin Barnes came up and doubled in Taylor and Pederson extending their lead to 4-0 and then Corey Seager singled in Barnes, Cody Bellinger doubled to open the top of the 7th as he went to 3rd on an Andrew Suarez wild pitch. AJ Pollock hit his 6th home run of the year to the left-field seats as the Dodgers had a comfortable lead a 7-0. Clayton Kershaw made the start and went 6 innings of 4 hit shutout ball with 4 strikeouts and walked 0 batters. The Dodgers had at least 4 players with 2 hits apiece.

The Giants were blanked for the 2nd game of their doubleheader, the first time that's happened to them since 1943 against the Cubs. They were held without a hit and baserunner until Brandon Belts single in the bottom of the 5th inning. Joey Rickard and Mike Yastrzemski each walked in the bottom of the 6th inning with 1 out but Wilmer Flores struck out and Evan Longoria grounded out to end the threat. Belt again singled in the bottom of the 7th inning and Joey Bart walked but Brandon Crawford struck out to end the game. Belt had the only 2 hits for the Giants as the team finished 0-3 with 5 runners left in scoring position. After winning 7 straight ballgames, the team dropped the final 2 of the season series against the Dodgers. Starter Kevin Gausman pitched 4 2/3 innings and allowed 2 runs off 3 hits with 6 strikeouts and walked 2 batters.


The Dodgers were happy to steal the final 2 games of the season series against the Giants even with a reliever on the mound. Caleb Ferguson made the start but only pitched the bottom of the 1st before giving the ball to Victor Gonzalez. He tossed 2 1/3 innings of baserunner free baseball and struck out 3 batters to give himself the win. Joc Pederson homered for the 5th time this season to break a 0-0 tie in the top of the 2nd inning. Pederson came up again with 2 outs in the top of the 4th and doubled to right field then scored on a Will Smith double to put the club up 2-0. The Dodgers offense also was very little as they finished with 3 hits, all going for extra bases and 2 off the bat of Pederson.
