The San Francisco Giants opened their 2nd round of the MLB Draft with a very odd selection. They took two-way player Casey Schmitt out of San Diego State, whos is a third baseman and a relief pitcher.
As a third baseman, he hit .295 with 6 home runs and totaled 77 RBIs for the San Diego State Aztec. He also played a year in the Cape Cod League and hit .248 with 5 homers and 18 RBIs in 149 plate appearances.
The 21-year-old appeared in 50 games going 4-5 in 4 starts as a pitcher in 3 seasons at San Diego State. He owed a 2.44 ERA totaling 78 strikeouts in 87 innings. Schmitt made it into 11 games while in the Cape Cod League for the Cotuit Kettleers and was 1-0 with a 2.45 ERA and had 26 strikeouts in 22 innings of work. He also had 23 saves over a 3 year span and 3 while in the Cape Cod League.
