Giants lose in extras, ground in postseason

SF 4

The San Francisco Giants needed to win today's game very badly and were pretty close in doing so. Austin Slater led the bottom half of the 1st inning off with a walk and then went to 3rd on an Alex Dickerson double. Wilmer Flores singled in Slater to make it a quiick 1-0 game. Brandon Belt struck out but the other Brandon, Crawford doubled in Dickerson to extend their lead to 2-0. Joey Bart, Steven Duggar and Austin all singled to open the bottom of the 2nd inning with 0 outs. Joey Bart scored on a wild pitch to give the club a 3-0 lead. The club failed to add on after Alex Dickerson grounded out, Wilmer Flores struck out and Brandon Belt flew out. The club lost their 3-0 lead and the Rockies had a 1 run lead when Brandon Belt stepped up in the bottom of the 8th inning. Belt hit his 1000th career hit to the left field bleachers for his 9th home run of the year and to tie the game at 4-4. Evan Longoria doubled with 1 out but the Giants failed to score him. Alex Dickerson started the bottom of the 10th at 2nd base and Rockies pitcher Daniel Bard intentionally walked both Brandon Belt and Crawford to load the bases with 1 out. Evan Longoria grounded into a fielders choice in which Dickerson was out at the plate on a nice play and crazy shift by the Rockies. The Giants trailed 5-4 in the bottom of the 11th but Tyler Heineman hit a sacrifice bunt to put Mauricio Dubon on 3rd. Darin Ruf was walked but Austin Slater grounded into a game-ending double play and the Giants dropped to .500 at 28-28 and the 2nd place wild card team. Kevin Gausman pitched 6 innings and allowed 2 runs off 8 hits with 9 strikeouts and walked just 1 batter. The Giants woes at the plate were dreadful after they went 3-18 with 11 men left in scoring position.

The Rockies knew they also had to win today to help the Giants be eliminated from postseason play. They trailed 3-0 going into the top of the 4th when Josh Fuentes singled and then scored on a Ryan McMahon double. Garrett Hampson hit a bunt single to put McMahon on 2nd with Sam Hilliard coming up. Hilliard popped out and Tony Wolters struck out but Ramiel Tapia singled in McMahon to cut the Giants lead to 3-2. Former Giant Kevin Pillar singled with 1 out in the top of the 7th and went to 3rd on a Trevor Story ground-rule double as Charlie Blackmon took his turn to bat. Blackmon grounded out, but Pillar scored the tying run to make it a 3-3 game. Josh Fuentes stepped up and singled in Story to give the Rockies a 4-3 lead and erase a 3-0 deficit. Once the Rockies gor back into the dugout after having the Giants strand the bases loaded Garrett Hampson started at 2nd base in the top of the 11th. He advanced to 3rd base on a Sam Hilliard ground out and Matt Kemp walked with Ramiel Tapia on deck. Tapia hit a sacrifice fly to score Hampson and again give the Rockies a 5-4 lead late. The Rockies had 5 players with at least 2 hits on the day with 13 total, and only 2 were extra-base hits. Starter Chi Chi Gonzalez went 5 1/3 innings with 3 runs off 8 hits and had 4 strikeouts while walking 2 batters. The Rockies were 3-18 with 12 men left in scoring position.

Record 28-28
