Winning pitcher: Tyler Chatwood (1-0)
Losing pitcher: Johnny Cueto (0-2)
Opening Day is more than 3 weeks away, and Johnny Cueto appears to be "in line" to be the Giants starter in Los Angeles Gabe Kapler said. Cueto's start said differently after going just 1.2 innings and allowed 5 runs off 9 hits with neither a walk or strikeout on the day. Aside from it being Spring Training Cueto still looked strong after missing time because of Tommy John surgery. The Giants were down as many as 9-0 before the bottom of the 5th when Jaylin Davis roped his 3rd double of the Spring to right field and went to 3rd on a Pablo Sandoval double to open the inning. Mike Yastrzemski tripled home both runners and then scored on a Bradon Belt sacrifice fly to make it a 9-3 game. Sandoval hit another double in the bottom of the 7th and made it to 3rd base on a Billy Hamilton ground out but was stranded. The team had only 8 hits on the day and were a dreadful 2-12 with 8 runners left in scoring position on the day.
The Chicago Cubs bats came out to play today against the Giants pitching staff. They out-hit San Francisco 21-8 with 5 doubles and 3 home runs on the day. Chicago opened the top of the 2nd with a Wison Contreras single but he was picked off. Jason Heyward, Victor Caratini, and David Bote singled after that, but Bote's single scored Heyward to make it a 1-0 game. Nike Hoerner singled to load the bases for Ian Happ who singled and Anthony Rizzo grounded out but it was 3-0 Cubs. Javier Baez doubled in the runners to pad the clubs lead to chase Johnny Cueto out of the game. The Cubs added 6 more runs in the top of the 9th which was fueled by a 2-run home run by Donnie Dewees to extend their lead to 16-3. Javier Baez and Wilson Contreras both led the way with 3 hits as 4 other Cubs players had 2 each. The team collectively went 9-15 with just 6 runners left in scoring position. Tyler Chatwood didn't have to do much to get his first Spring win but did pitch 3.2 shutout innings and allowed 3 hits with 4 strikeouts.
The Giants will head back to Surprise to face the Rangers again, Kevin Gausman will go against Luke Farrell.
