The San Francisco Giants finally helped one of their pitchers achieve something he hadn't done yet. Kevin Gausman recorded his first Spring Training win in a Giants uniform today in a rain-shortened game, he pitched 3.1 innings and allowed 4 runs off 7 hits with 3 strikeouts and walked 1 batter. Alex Dickerson had seen his name in the leadoff spot just 80 times in his career while boasting a .288 average and today he tripled to kick off the ballgame. Red hot Darin Ruf stepped up and doubled for the 5th time this Spring to give the GIants a quick 1-0 lead. For Ruf, it was his 8th extra-base hit this Spring out of 11 total hits to boost his average to .440 with 8 RBIs. After Mauricio Dubon grounded out, Tyler Heineman walked and Austin Slater singled in Ruf and as Yolmer Sanchez singled in Heineman to put the Giants up 3-0. Zach Green extended the clubs lead with an RBI single of his own to give himself 10 RBIs this Spring; Slater added another RBI in the top of the 3rd with a double that scored Mauricio Dubon.
The Texas Rangers hoped they had hoped the rain would've let up so they could try to come back and beat San Francisco. Instead, mother nature made the umpires call the game at the end of the 5th inning. Starter Ferrell was pulled after manager Kyle Woodward saw rain the forecast, he later pitched the final inning, He had 2 strikeouts without allowing a baserunner. Joe Palumbo got the start instead and tossed 2 innings with 4 runs off 5 hits with 2 strikeouts and walked 1 batter. Texas trailed 4-0 going into the bottom of the 2nd before Scott Heineman (brother of Giants Tyler) tripled and Sam Travis homered to cut the deficit to 2 runs. Rougned Odor singled on a bunt to begin the bottom of the 3rd as Ronald Guzman hit him to 2nd on a 1 out single. Todd Frazier doubled to score both runners and bring the Giants lead to 6-4. Odor had 2 of the teams 7 hits on the shortened game as they went 3-9 with 6 runners left in scoring position.
The Giants are off tomorrow but the league announced that the rest of Spring Training would be postponed due to concerns of Coronavirus.
