Dickerson makes history as Giants roll

Tonight's game was one for the ages as well as the record books for both the Giants and Alex Dickerson. Alex Dickerson smoked a 480 foot home run in the top of the 1st inning to give the club an early 1-0 lead. He was long from being done for the night. Evan Longoria and Brandon Belt both singled to right field to extend the inning. Donovan Solano doubled to score both runners and push their lead to 3-0. Joey Bart singled to lead off the top of the 2nd and Alex Dickerson hit his 2nd home run of the night to extend their lead to 5-0. Brandon Belt knocked his 2nd hit of the night to left field for a double and then Brandon Crawford singled him in to score as well. Crawford stole 2nd base as Joey Bart joined the RBI party with another base hit to make it a 7-0 game for the Giants. Alex Dickerson doubled after Mike Yastrzemski walked leading off the top of the 4th but Yastrzemski was out at home on the play. Evan Longoria singled in Dickerson as San Francisco opened the game up to an 8-1 lead. Mauricio Dubon singled with 2 outs in the top of the 5th and scored on a Mike Yastrzemski triple, it was his 4th of the year. The Giants continued to add on with a Brandon Belt double, Wilmer Flores walk, and a Donovan Solano single, as it was 10-2. Brandon Crawford emptied the bases with a 3-run home run to continue the onslaught of offense for the Giants. The inning pressed on when Joey Bart singled and after a Mauricio Dubon strikeout Mike Yastrzemski singled to bring up Dickerson. He homered for the 3rd time of the night and pushing their lead even farther to 16-2. Pablo Sandoval had a pinch-hit single in the top of the 7th, and Wilmer Flores singled as well as Donovan Solano singled in Sandoval to keep the lead growing. Mauricio Dubon came up in the same inning with the bases loaded and hit a sacrifice fly to score Flores to make it a 16-run game. Alex Dickerson led off the top of the 8th with a walk and newly acquired infielder Daniel Robertson singled him to 2nd base as Pablo Sandoval lined out. Darin Ruf pinch hit for Willmer Flores who walked to load the bases for the Giants again. Donovan Solano roped a double to left field and then Brandon Crawford doubled in Ruf and Solano to make it a 22-2 game for San Francisco. Joey Bart grounded out but Mauricio Dubon added another run on the club ledger with a double of his own that scored Crawford. Alex Dickerson had a chance at a 4 homer game but instead hit a double, high off the center field wall to give him his 5th hit of the night. Kevin Gausman started this game and got the win going 5 innings and allowed 2 runs off 2 hits with 5 strikeouts and walked 1 batter. Dickerson was the first Giants player to have 3 homers through 6 innings since Willie Mays did it in his eventual 4 homer game in 1961. He is the first Giant to do it since Mike Yastrzemski did it last year against the Diamondbacks. Dickerson's 6 RBIs match his career-high he set last season on June 21 against Arizona and had 16 total bases tonight. He joined Barry Bonds, Wes Westrum, Mel Ott, and George Kelly to have at least 14 in one game. He also tied Matt Carpenter for 5 extra-base hits in a game when Carpenter did it in 2018. Dickerson is the first Giants player to have 5 extra-base hits in a game since Barry Bonds did it at Coors in 2002. The last time the Giants scored at least 20 runs and had at least 24 hits was in 1990 when they trounced the Braves 23-8. The Giants are the first team ever to have at least 3 players with at least 6 RBIs in a game in MLB history.

The Colorado Rockies wished they hadn't played tonight as their bullpen took a beating. Garret Hampson made a dent in the Giants lead by knocking a solo shot to left field making it just a 7-1 game. He came up and homered again in the bottom of the 5th but the club was then down by 7 runs. Tony Walters walked in the bottom of the 8th and then scored on a Raimel Tapia double and after Elias Diaz grounded out, Josh Fuentes singled in Tapia. Matt Kemp and Ryan McMahon tried rallying the troops with back to back singles to lead off the bottom of the 9th. Tony Walters walked to load the bases with 1 out as Raimel Tapia hit a sacrifice fly but the score was 23-5 and Elias Diaz grounded out to end the bleeding and ballgame. Starter Jon Gray pitched 2 2/3 innings with 7 runs allowed off 9 hits with 1 strikeout and walked nobody. Catcher Drew Butera pitched 1 2/3 innings and allowed 1 run off 3 hits with 1 strikeout to save the Rockies bullpen. They had 5 relievers combine to allow 15 hits and 15 runs with 5 walks and 4 strikeouts on the night. Former Giant Kevin Pillar was acquired by the Rockies in a trade with Boston at the deadline and went 0-3 against his former club.
