Cahill exits early but Giants hold on for win

SF 5

The San Francisco Giants may have lost a pitcher to their rotation but it fueled them for a win to snap their 3 game losing streak. Trevor Cahill had hip discomfort while pitching tonight and exited the game after 3 1/3 innings and allowed 2 runs off 2 hits with 4 strikeouts and walked 2 batters. The Giants were on the board early when Alex Dickerson singled with 1 out and then scored on an Evan Longoria double in the top of the 1st inning. Brandon Belt backed up Longoria's double for one of his own and the club went up 2-0. Mauricio Dubon joined the hitting shindig with a 2 out single in the top of the 2nd and was scored on Mike Yastrzemski's 11th double of the season to make it a 3-0 game.Evan Longoria doubled to open the top of the 3rd inning and then Brandon Belt walked. Wilmer Flores struck out but Pablo Sandoval singled in Longoria to extend the Giants lead to 4-0. Brandon Crawford singled to load the bases and after Joey Bart struck out, the Giants failed to make it a big inning after Mauricio Dubon lined out to end the frame. Brandon Crawford doubled but didn't score in the top of the 5th but the Giants had their 5th double of the night, a new season-high for them. Wimer Flores hit his 8th home run of the season in the top of the 9th for some wiggle room late in the game to give the club a 5-2 lead. San Francisco had 5 players with at least 2 of their 13 hits in the game, but Joey Bart led the team with 8 runners left on base after stranding the bases loaded twice. Barts failure to capitalize caused the Giants to go 3-13 with 11 runners left in scoring position. Side note, the Giants are 3-0 this year when they strike out 13+ times.

The Arizona offense was quieted tonight by the Giants pitching staff even after Trevor Cahill departed with an injury. Starling Marte singled in the bottom of the 4th and after David Peralta grounded out Christian Walker came up. Walker drilled his 4th home run of the year to the left-center field wall and went up the bleachers to cut the Giants lead to 2 runs. Eduardo Escobar tripled with 1 out in the bottom of the 7th but was stranded as Nick Ahmed lined out and Stephen Vogt struck out swinging. That triple was the last hit for the Diamondbacks for the rest of the game. they were just 1-4 with 4 runners left in scoring position. Starter Luke Weaver went 3 innings and allowed 4 runs off 8 hits with 6 strikeouts and walked just 1 batter.
