Bergen DFA'd, Avelino gets called up

San Francisco Giants reliever Travis Bergen and his time with the Giants are likely over. He was designated for assignment this morning and infielder Abiatal Avelino was brought up from the Sacramento Rivercats.

Bergen was taken out of the Rule 5 draft by the Giants via the Toronto Blue Jays earlier this year. He appeared in 21 games for the Giants and was 2-0 with 18 strikeouts but had an ERA of 5.49.

Avelino will be brought back up to the MLB club and has appeared in just 6 games for the Giants and has 3 hits in 11 at bats this season. He was acquired in the Yankees trade that sent Andrew McCutchen and cash to New York, Juan De Paula was also acquired by the Giants. The Dominican Republic native has been hitting .285 for AAA Sacramento with 12 home runs and 60 RBIs in 114 games for the Rivercats.
