The San Francisco Giants won another ballgame and are now the 2nd wild card team, which would face the Colorado Rockies. The club trailed 2-0 heading to the bottom of the 3rd inning but Chadwick Tromp led off the inning with his 3rd homer of the year. Austin Slater singled to open the bottom of the 6th with the Giants still trailing by 1 run. Donovan Solano came up and hit a homer to left center field to give the club a 3-2 lead. Brandon Belt also sent a homer to the seats, this one stayed dry but it was also an insurance run late in the game. Austin Slater and Donovan Solano combined on the day to go 5-8 with 2 RBIs, 2 doubles and a home run. Johnny Cueto took the mound at the start of the day going 5 2/3 innings with 2 runs off 7 hits with 3 walks and struck out 7 batters. San Francisco's bullpen allowed just 1 hit and struck out 6 batters over the final 3 1/3 innings.
The Arizona Diamond backs offense was held to just 2 runs, all in the top of the 1st inning. Tom Locastro left the yard to begin the ballgame for his first home run of the year. Kole Calhoun then singled and David Peralto singled him to 3rd, with no outs. Eduardo Escobar struck out but Josh Rojas hit a sacrifice fly to make it a 2-0 lead for the Diamondbacks. Nick Ahmed and Jake Lamb both singled to lead off the top of the 5th and after Jon Jay popped out to Evan Longoria, Tim Locastro stepped up. Locastro reached first base but Ahmed was out at home trying to add another run. Kole Calhoun walked to load the bases with 2 outs, but David Peralta struck out to end the frame. Arizona loaded the bases again in the top of the 6th and the Giants replaced Jonnny Cueto with reliever Caleb Baragar. Barager got Jon Jay to fly out to end the inning and the threat of Arizona adding runs to their 1-run lead. The Diamondbacks were 0-7 with 8 runners left in scoring position on the day. Starter Alex Young tossed 5 1/3 innings and allowed 3 runs off 7 hits with 3 strikeouts and walked nobody.
