Bats go quiet as Giants get blanked



The Giants needed a win tonight to keep their postseason dreams alive but instead, they were silenced in a defeat. Starter Logan Webb was beaten up by the A's yet again going 3 1/3 innings and allowed 6 runs off 6 hits with 1 strikeout and walked 2 batters. The San Francisco Giants offense was held to one extra-base hit, a double by Brandon Crawford in the top of the 2nd inning. He was stranded, they had 2 other hits on the night both singles. The club was walked 5 times but nothing came of them, also stranded. The loss brings the Giants to 25-25 and currently out of the playoff race with 10 games left. They were shutout for the 4th time this season and 5th time with 3 or fewer hits.

The Oakland A's won yet again and waited until the Mariners lost to clinch a playoff berth, their magic number is 2 to clinch the AL West crown. They did it for the 6th time in 9 years and only the Dodgers have done that more times with 8 total. Marcus Semien walked with 1 out in the bottom of the 1st and Mark Canha reached on a fielder's choice to bring up Matt Olson. He struck out by Jake Lamb singled in Semien to make it a 1-0 game. Semien then reached on a force out in the bottom of the 3rd inning and Mark Caanha walked to bring up Olson again. He homered to right to make it a 4-0 game with his 14th dinger of the season. Ramon Laureano was hit by a pitch with 1 out in the bottom of the 4th and Tony Kemp singled him to 3rd base to bring up former Angel Tommy La Stella. La Stella singled in Laureano and then Marcus Semien singled in Kemp to extend their lead to 6-0. Chris Bassitt got the win going 6 2/3 shutout innings with 3 hits allowed and walked 3 batters with 7 strikeouts.
