Baserunning gaffe costs Giants ballgame

SF 5

The San Francisco Giants may have scored 23 runs the other night against the Rockies but now are all of a sudden exhausted. They trailed 1-0 after the top of the 1st inning but after a Mike Yastrzemski strikeout, Alex Dickerson singled and then Evan Longoria lined out but red hot Brandon Belt stepped into the box. He doubled down the right-field line and Dickerson scored on the play as the ball hit off the sidewall by the old bullpens. They trailed again going into the bottom half of the 3rd inning but Alex Dickerson doubled to open the inning and went to 3rd base on an Evan Longoria grounded out. Brandon Belt walked and after Wilmer Flores struck out, Donovan Solano singled on a dribbler to the shortstop Nick Ahmed to score Dickerson and tie the game at 2-2. Joey Bart singled to open the bottom of the 4th after Arizona went ahead 4-2 and then scored on a Mauricio Dubon double to bring the Diamondbacks lead to 1-run. Wilmer Flores hit a ground-rule double with 1 out in the bottom of the 5th and then crossed the plate on a Brandon Crawford single which brought their deficit to 2 runs. Brandon Belt hit a ball that bounced into McCovey Cove for his 6th home run on the year to bring the score to 6-5 Arizona. San Francisco had the bases loaded in the bottom of the 8th after Joey Bart and Mauricio Dubon singled as Mike Yastrzemski was hit by a pitch with 0 outs. Alex Dickerson came up and flew out but Dubon was halfway between 2nd and 3rd and was rung up for a double play. The next batter Evan Longoria grounded out to end the inning and strand, two runners, on base. Tyler Anderson was shelled with 4 runs allowed off 7 hits with 2 strikeouts and walked 1 batter. The Giants were a miserable 2-12 with 11 runners left in scoring position. Belt, Dickerson, Bart, and Duoon all had collected 2 hits each.

The Arizona Diamondbacks are now looking at their series against the Giants a thing of the past after being swept. Tonight their offense came out swinging early as Ketel Marte homered in the top of the 1st with 1 out to give his club a 1-0 lead. The Giants tied the game quickly but Daulton Varsho singled and went to 2nd on a sacrifice bunt by Tim Locastro and then Marte came up again and doubled to left field to make it a 2-1 game. Nick Ahmed and Josh Rojas both singled leading off the top of the 4th when Varsho singled in both runners breaking the tie and going ahead 4-2. Christian Walker walked to lead off the top of the 5th and then Eduardo Escobar doubled him to 3rd base. Kole Calhoun hit a sacrifice fly to extend their lead to 5-3 and then Ahmed singled in Escobar to push their lead to 6-3. Martel led all Arizona hitters with 4 of their total 12 and former Giant Travis Bergen got the win. Bergen was with the Giants last year and then was returned to Toronto and then Arizona picked him up at the trade deadline for Robbie Ray and cash. Starter Taylor Clarke pitched 3 innings and allowed 3 runs off 6 hits with 2 walks and 3 strikeouts.
