The Giants arrived in Seattle and took in what most of the west coast has been dealing with in relation to the fires. The air quality in Seattle hours before the first pitch was 270 and so the umpires and the league office decided to shift the series back to San Francisco. The teams hopped on their planes and Seattle will be the home team in tonight's game as well as tomorrow's finale. The Giants may have swept the Mariners last week, and after that they were swept by the Padres. They can get back on the winning swing of things with a win today and help propel them into the postseason with just 11 games left of the season. The Giants currently sit in 8th place in the postseason standings and as a 2nd wild card team to the Phillies. Tyler Anderson will start tomorrow, but Drew Smyly will take over and make his first start in over 6 weeks after dealing with an injured finger. He is still 0-0 on the year in 4 games and has today will be his 3rd start of the year and first since August 1st against Texas. Smyly is 1-2 in 8 career games against the Mariners including 4 starts. He has a 6.07 ERA in those games with 35 strikeouts in 29 2/3 innings of work.
Ljay Newsome will also make his 2nd start against the Giants in the last week. He threw just 1 1/3 innings and allowed 1 run off 2 hits with a pair of strikeouts and 0 walks Newsome left the game after taking a line drive off his wrist. He homes for a better result as the club is winless when he takes the mound in his 2 starts, he is also winless in his 3 games this season. Newsome has spent most of his time in the Mariners minor league system and has a career record of 30-32 in 99 games (91 starts) with 473 strikeouts and a 4.11 ERA. The Mariners sit at 22-26 on the year and are 12-9 at home.
